From Facts to Faith Workshop
No one who has read the stories of Sherlock Holmes or watched a show on forensic science has any doubt about the great power of deductive reasoning. Through applied logical conclusions we can recreate what actually occurred just moments earlier. Logic and inference have created many scientific advances and technology. Through deduction we now have a computer, advanced medicine, and many other modern technologies. Everyone extols the inventor and scientist for their astute and accurate use of logic and deduction.
Yet an amazing paradox occurs when the Christian uses logic and deduction to see God’s nature. Few today will praise that effort. In fact, many people feel a need to mock or scorn using negative terms like “gullible,” “superstitious,” or using “a crutch for the weak.”
God through his word and nature has logical conclusions. Applying deductive reasoning will result in a “faith” that is true and reasonable. A Christian can synthesize facts and deduce conclusions just like Sherlock Holmes. Faith is that “evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1).
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (Rom 1:20-21)
